The Famous "I'm Bored"

So with the "Lovely" Irish weather this "Summer" we're not finding too many opportunities to have the promised family fun days out that we wanted. Hence the lack of blogs lately :( Namely trips to the beach etc. The kids are super board, and who can blame them really. We've discovered two new parks close by our house. They're lovely,  One of them even has a skate park, which the kids love. We've made good use of the local kids cinema club. Bought some new outdoor games (for dry days, not sunny, but dry even ha) Our big box of board & card games, is getting plenty of action on rainy days. As well as the "art corner". Baking days still work as distraction from boredom too which is good. But the usual forms of entertainment are not redundant either of course. Wii, 3DS's, Tv, dvds, Music, Internet games the lot, still play a part (will they ever not?). My point being, sadly we aren't having the weather that we hoped Summer would bring. So what do ya do???? The other day, it was a cool enough day, dull and threatening rain but over all, not too bad. Kids were playing outside. Coming in... and going out.... coming in..... and going out. and so on, ya get the point. So anyways after about the millionth time I asked the children what was wrong? Why were they coming in & then going out again, so much. I got the answer I know I've given as a child many times.. "I'm just bored"  I had a hold back a laugh. Right outside our front door was 3 pairs of roller blades, 2 flickers, basket & foot ball, a dolls buggy (with ALL the extras that go with that) and the new outdoor games we had bought. But yet they were bored? they wanted to bring there 3ds out, or could they just come in and watch a movie? there's nothing to do.... that was all I could take. This was both funny and ridiculous at the same time. So in answer to my earlier question.... what do ya do? YOU GO BACK TO THE BASICS. I sat the children down and we talked. I told them about the games that were invented long ago :) About Chasing. Hide & Seek. Kick the can. Rhymes for Skipping to. rounders. Pat a cake. hop scotch. Roy Rover. Stuck in the mud. Queeny I owe..... etc etc. that didn't need batteries or fancy equipment. or in some cases any equipment at all. I ignored the sarcastic looks and continued on to tell them about books. "yes we use to sit outside in fresh air and read sometimes for the fun of it" We imagined magical worlds. We played schools, mammies & Daddies, doctors, all sorts of things. We were cowboys one day and aliens the next ha All we needed was an empty match box and we were an explorer in the jungle looking for ladybirds ha I finished our talk asking them to imagine all the things I'd told them. They  looked at me and each in their own way vowed that they'd never complain again. Was it because I talked too much ha no it was because, and I Quote "it was worse in the olden days" OMG was all I could think. How did I become the one from the olden days? This has turned into my longest blog I think ha. I just want to finish by saying that today, without any prompting at all, katie & Michael asked me to help them build there house (tent) because they needed to hide away from the baddies. I was glad to know I was on their side and we imagined the rest of the afternoon away. So yes the weather is bad, people have to budget more, so holidays away aren't as easy, but if we just go back to the basics..... who knows where it can lead us???? Happy adventures people :)

  1. Ha Ha. I remembered those games and the lazy summer afternoons i had as a kid. The words bored are banned in my house and if they do mention the word, i give them housework. :) lol
